One of the hottest rappers on the scene, a member of the 116 Clique, and a nominee for a Kingdom Choice Award, Canon is blowing up the industry with his unique flow and rapid-fire rhymes. This Chicago born/Atlanta based rapper has grabbed the attention of not only the Christian industry, but mainstream media outlets as well. He was recently featured on global sports giant ESPN’s First Take with a free style video that had over 26,000 views on YouTube which left the sports and social media world buzzin’ for more. He has been featured on numerous tracks with Lecrae, KB, Derek Minor and Andy Mineo, as well as other heavy hitters in the rap industry.
Canon’s road hasn’t always been lined with success and excitement. Born in a middle class neighborhood in Chicago IL filled with violence and crime, he and his family were forced to journey through out the state in hopes of finding a much safer climate. His mother, who at the time worked for Moody Bible Institute, introduced him to Christ. He served with the rest of his family at his grandfather’s church but didn’t really experience true transformation. The end results were of him getting involved in negative activity.
Throughout this time though, Canon grew in his desire to both know Christ fully and to rap. He began attending “The House” which was a church where Hip Hop shaped the culture. He was then discipled by the pastor as well as others; the outcome was him growing in his walk with the Lord and maturing into a man of God.
He then moved to Memphis to attend Bible College. It was here where he reconnected with Reach Records’ Lecrae and Derek Minor. He ended up leaving school early and began doing life with these emcees. He was challenged by them to use his experiences and share it through his music, which led to him releasing “The Great Investment” mix tape in 2009. Through the success of his mix-tape he began to gain the attention of people all over the world who wanted to hear more from him. His big break was when he was featured on Lecrae’s Rehab: The Overdose, which then led to him signing with Reflection Music Group in 2011.
Now having released his debut album Mad Haven to much acclaim and fanfare (climbed the charts as high as #3 on Billboard’s Gospel Albums Chart) and to top off an already strong 2014, Canon released the highly anticipated follow up to his debut album with Loose Canon Volume 2 (LCV2) which debuted at #3 on iTunes Hip-Hop/Rap chart. It features some dope guest spots from Social Club, Derek Minor, Shonlock, and B. Cooper. The albums lead single “Trippen” which was recently featured on JamTheHype’s Hot 4 at 4 has been burnin’ up the airwaves and has set the bar for what LCV2 has to offer. Produced by Eighty7, the beat on this track with Canon’s trademark rhyming style is guaranteed to get you turnt up.
As if this year hasn’t brought Canon enough joy, he is also getting married to his lovely fiancé. Canon’s overall desire is to help people see how God can change their world and to communicate that to them as creatively as possible. He has many projects in store for 2015, which include serving God and his wife, working on a new album, and growing his brand as an artist.
